What is SEO or Search Engine Optimization?

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is building or modifying a website to effectively utilize search engines in order to index a given keyword and or to give that key word on the website a high ranking in the search engine’s index. There are a lot myths about SEO, such as writing key words with white text on a white background (known as invisible text) over and over again. I tried this once on the first web site I built…a long, long time ago. It got the site “Black Balled” from Google until I pulled all the hidden text down from the site. It doesn’t pay to be tricky with search engines! If you try to trick the search engines they penalize you. All people who do SEO have their secrets. Well…I am going to let the cat out of the bag. The trick to getting high ranking in search engines is to write a lot of quality original content and to be patient. There’s no trick really, just an hour or less of writing per week for your site.

Can I just copy text from another site?

Absolutely Not! First of all, it’s called plagiarism and secondly, search engines give sites negative ranking for copied text.

What is a lot of content?

I would say the more you write the better, but two small to medium sized paragraphs per week is a good place to start.

What should I write about?

When people search on the internet people don’t look for questions people look for answers. Notice how this is written with questions and answers.

What is a Key Word?

A Key Word is a word that a person might use to search the Internet for your site.

Can I use a key word too many times?

Yes! It’s called “Key Word Stuffing” and if you use a word to many times you could get “Black Balled” for that word, or worse, your whole website could get “Black Balled”.

How do I know if I have used a word too many times?

For the most part, I have found that well written articles work best…where you don’t get particularly obsessed with any one keyword. I like to make a list of at least 10 key words that I think people would use in search engines (100 or more is better) and then use them in my blog or on my web page entries where appropriate.

Here is an example for the key word “bolts”:
Bad – Bolts are use to blot things together. Like you could bolt two bolts together. Then you would have one big bolt. I love the word bolt. I could say bolt all day…bolt, bolt, bolt!!! Did I forget to mention the word bolt? Bolts are the best!

Never repeat your key word in a row! Never use the same key word in every sentence.
Good – Bolts were invented in the year of 2008 by a man named Maui Jim. He made his discovery after purchasing an “Erector Set”. The “Erector Set” came with screws and these little round objects that fit on top of the screws. Maui Jim named the little round objects bolts.

It is important to start and end with your main key word or words.

How long do I have to wait till I start to see results?

I usually tell people that it takes about year or two before you get any significant results. But I have noticed that if you use a blog on your site, you should start seeing some minor results in about a month or two.
