So you just came up with that great idea and now you need a web site… What next?
Fist do some home work:
Look what your competitors are doing. What do they have on there site? What do you like on there site? What don’t you like on there site?
Look at non-related web sites. What do you like that about that site? I like that because it’s easy to navigate. I like that site because it has a cool intro page.
Think of theme for your site. If you sell real estate in Hawaii might want to go with flower theme or a ocean theme. But most web artist will come up with theme for you if you can’t think of one yourself.
Color… Generally most web sites use 2 or 3 colors. Take a look at this web site to see how color affects emotions.
How do you want the web site to work? Are you going to need to add new pages often? E-commerce? Will people need to log-on to access information? Will people need to up load any thing? Will it need to interact with other software like an inventory program? Not that you will need to know exactly how the site is going to work but it will help your designer see what your vision of the web site will be.
How will people find your site? Most web surfers find web sites using search engines like Google. How ever some web site owners prefer to tell people about there site and do not want to make there site easily readable by search engines. Learn more about”Search Engen Optimaztion”.
Growth. What is the future of your website? Are there features that you plan on adding to the site later? How big can this site get?
Who will upkeep your site? And how will the upkeep be done?
A good web designer should ask you most of these questions before they start construction of your site. It is always a good idea to set goals for your designer so there are no confusion with your expectations of your new website.
!!!Important!!! Make sure the domain name (ex: “your-website-name.com”) and web hosting is register to you and that all emails concerning your account go to your e-mail address. Also, make sure you make hard copies of your user names and password for you domain name and web hosting account. Some times your designer my not always be available to make emergency changes to your site. I hope this helps you with your quest to build the best site on the world wide web.
FireFox is just a way better browser but yet I still find my self using IE. Here are a few problems I am having with IE 7.
Doesn’t work well with wordpress.
Doesn’t work well Adobe buzzword (Awesome web app by the way)
Has trouble rendering PNG images. Especially larger images with transparency or drop shadows.
Just dose not work as well with flash as others web browsers do.
Doesn’t allow plug-ins on like firebug.
However every moring when I plug in I see that IE icon and I see that Firefox icon. Guess witch one I click on… That’s right IE.
Why am I doing this? When Firefox has been siting there so politely this whole time. Maybe it’s just because every one else dose. But if that’s the case I hope every on doesn’t start jumping off cliffs. Don’t make me jump I’ll do it! Well I guess what I am trying to say is please…every one… please use FireFox.

Hard Drive Reformat – What is a hard drive reformat?
Hard Drive Reformat is when all the information on a Hard Drive is erased, including the operating system. This is some times the easiest solution to fixing a computer. After the hard drive is erased, we reload a fresh copy of your operating system and then reinstall all the data previously backed up. Basically we restore your computer to like new speed and condition.
Virus Removal – I HATE computer viruses!
I have yet to meet the nasty little evil program that could beat me!! If you own a PC and don’t have current virus protection, you can download a free virus protection program called AVG Free located on the download page of this site. You can also download it by clicking here. Some symptoms of a virus might just seem annoying or minor at first, like an unwanted search bar in Internet Explorer. Minor problems like this seem harmless but usually have a deeper and much more serious problem and should be fixed as soon as possible. Any time a web site asks you to download a program, it’s imperative that you make sure you’re dealing with a trustworthy site and/or a company who’s identity you trust (ie - Adobe). I can also remove spyware, ad-ware or any other nasty little programs that may have managed its way into your computer.
Wireless network installations and security – Are you ready for wireless?
Wireless networks are common now a days. Secured wireless networks are not. Did you know that if you own a Mac, it automatically shares your photos with other Mac computers connected to your wireless connection? If you are operating on an unsecured wireless router or modem, any one can use your internet connection…and any beginning hacker can view confidential information that you transmitted over the internet. Data Security – When was the last time you backed up your data?
When was the last time you tested your backups? How much time would cost you to replicate the data on your computer right now? Did you know that, according to Dell, Maui County has more power surges than any county outside of Florida? Did you know that most inexpensive surge protectors only protect for 2 power surges? There are so many different factors that could cause you to lose data. I recommend, at a bare minimum, purchasing an external hard drive and copying important files to the drive regularly. Remember to unplug the external hard drive when it’s not in use to protect it from power surges. If you are not quite sure what you need for data security, give me a call as I have experience with all kinds of back up programs and options such as DVD, Tape, Ghosting Hard Drives, On and Off Site back ups etc. I am also experience with programs like Veritas Backup Exec, Backup Genie, Windows Home Server and many other third party programs. Just remember to run and test your backups regularly!

Remote Computer Repair – What is remote desktop?
Remote Desktop allows you or a computer repair technician to take control of the mouse on your desktop and run programs as if they were standing right in front of the computer. Remote desktop is great for some who needs to get access to any computer from a remote location. This is great for people who need to work from home. Many problems that have to do with software, viruses and security can be fixed remotely. There are many options for remote desktop such as Webex or Symantec pcAnywhere that can be easily installed on any computer. SEO or Search Engine Optimization is building or modifying a website to effectively utilize search engines in order to index a given keyword and or to give that key word on the website a high ranking in the search engine’s index. There are a lot myths about SEO, such as writing key words with white text on a white background (known as invisible text) over and over again. I tried this once on the first web site I built…a long, long time ago. It got the site “Black Balled” from Google until I pulled all the hidden text down from the site. It doesn’t pay to be tricky with search engines! If you try to trick the search engines they penalize you. All people who do SEO have their secrets. Well…I am going to let the cat out of the bag. The trick to getting high ranking in search engines is to write a lot of quality original content and to be patient. There’s no trick really, just an hour or less of writing per week for your site.
Can I just copy text from another site?
Absolutely Not! First of all, it’s called plagiarism and secondly, search engines give sites negative ranking for copied text.
What is a lot of content?
I would say the more you write the better, but two small to medium sized paragraphs per week is a good place to start.
What should I write about?
When people search on the internet people don’t look for questions people look for answers. Notice how this is written with questions and answers.
What if I don’t have time to write content for my web site?

What is a Key Word?
A Key Word is a word that a person might use to search the Internet for your site.
Can I use a key word too many times?
Yes! It’s called “Key Word Stuffing” and if you use a word to many times you could get “Black Balled” for that word, or worse, your whole website could get “Black Balled”.
How do I know if I have used a word too many times?
For the most part, I have found that well written articles work best…where you don’t get particularly obsessed with any one keyword. I like to make a list of at least 10 key words that I think people would use in search engines (100 or more is better) and then use them in my blog or on my web page entries where appropriate.
Here is an example for the key word “bolts”: Bad – Bolts are use to blot things together. Like you could bolt two bolts together. Then you would have one big bolt. I love the word bolt. I could say bolt all day…bolt, bolt, bolt!!! Did I forget to mention the word bolt? Bolts are the best!
Never repeat your key word in a row! Never use the same key word in every sentence. Good – Bolts were invented in the year of 2008 by a man named Maui Jim. He made his discovery after purchasing an “Erector Set”. The “Erector Set” came with screws and these little round objects that fit on top of the screws. Maui Jim named the little round objects bolts.
It is important to start and end with your main key word or words.

How long do I have to wait till I start to see results?
I usually tell people that it takes about year or two before you get any significant results. But I have noticed that if you use a blog on your site, you should start seeing some minor results in about a month or two.

HandBrake - Cool little app for ripping copyrighted DVDs. Its easy use and its free. Can’t complain about that!
Firefox - This is just a great web browser. Safari is just lacking in some areas. Also fire fox usually works on those few Internet Explorer only web sites. With it’s ability to morph. It really has become the browser of choice for the web 2.0 generation!
IE For Mac - Well it’s still a PC world so you might need it here and there. I would not put it on you Mac unless you need it!
AVG Free Edition - This is by far the best FREE anti virus out there. It’s a pretty straight forward install. Make sure to remove any old anti virus software programs before installation. If you are using a PC these days, it’s imperative that you have some sort of virus protection on you computer!
Window Defender - This is spy ware protection provided by Microsoft for free. It does a pretty good job blocking spy ware in real time. This is only for Windows XP, Windows Vista already has the program built in. I also recommend using Ad-Aware to pick up anything that Windows Defender over sees.
